Being a PhD student @Chalmers/TME means being employed by Chalmers (unless you are an industrial PhD student). As a Chalmers-employed PhD student, your TME PhD journey is designed to take 5 years, distributed onto activities by default as follows:
- 80%: Research
- Note that the label “Research” is misleading here. These 80% cover your Research work same as Coursework and any Admin work you need to do - basically anything other than Teaching (Department work). As your TME PhD journey is mainly evaluated by your Research output, aim to be as efficient as possible with your Coursework and Admin. Regarding Coursework, also aim for synergies with your Research work, e.g. by taking a course which allows you to submit texts you have already written (or will have to write anyways) as assignments.
- 20%: Teaching
- Note that this is technically referred to as “Department work”. You may also spend part of your 20% on other duties, such as being an active member of the TME PhD Council. Typically though, these 20% are dedicated to Teaching activities, which may include activities such as:
Note that this distribution of your time is primarily an accounting mechanism, determining how you get paid from a Chalmers perspective. It might not reflect how you actually spend your time. That said, it might be a good idea to keep track of how you spend your working hours and reflect this against the standard 80/20 distribution.
