Doing research is a highly individual endeavor. Depending on needs and traditions of your research area, you might engage in different activities to different extents.

Research is done to get published - otherwise, nobody will know about the findings of your research. At TME, most PhD students write a compilation thesis, i.e. a doctoral thesis consisting of a collection of articles, tied together by a kappa. During and especially after your PhD studies (if you decide to stay in academia), the eventual goal is to publish your research articles in academic Journals (alternatively: e.g., books/book chapters).

Viewing what you do as a PhD student from a publication perspective, your research activities might look something like this:

• Conceptualizing/ ideating (research design)
• Reading
• Collecting data
• Analyzing data
• Writing
• Getting published / How to: Journals
• Writing a kappa / Writing a monograph

However, you should not forget that there are other activities which might be less obvious (but definitely not less important):

• Getting feedback / How to: Conferences
• Visiting seminars
• Reviewing
