Doing research is a highly individual endeavor. Depending on needs and traditions of your research area, you might engage in different activities to different extents.

Research is done to get published - otherwise, nobody will know about the findings of your research. At TME, most PhD students write a compilation thesis, i.e. a doctoral thesis consisting of a collection of articles, tied together by a kappa. During and especially after your PhD studies (if you decide to stay in academia), the eventual goal is to publish your research articles in academic Journals (alternatively: e.g., books/book chapters).
